What are building codes?

Suggestion/Report Error

A building code is the set of rules that specifies the standards for buildings and other structures within a jurisdiction as established by the responsible government authority.  A building code specifies such matters as minimum lot size, the density of the buildings (e.g., single-family houses or multi-user dwellings), the height and amount of space the structures may occupy, restrictions on accessory buildings, the position of structures on the lot (e.g., setbacks from the streets and other boundaries), the types and amount of surface on a lot (area), off-street parking, and location of utility lines.

Building codes are intended to protect public health, safety and general welfare.  They include green building standards and historic preservation codes.

Where buildings are in areas of historic or cultural significance, zoning regulations commonly require that the features of such building be preserved.  Zoning in some countries includes an impact study with greenspace regulations and regulations for building design.
