What does gross expense ratio mean?

The total annual fund or class operating expenses directly paid by the fund before waivers or reimbursements (from the fund's most recent prospectus), including acquired fund fees and expenses, expressed as a percentage of its assets, as a dollar amount or in basis points, thus reducing the investment's rate of return.
