What are facilities services?

Facility services are those services organized and rendered by facilities managers that focus on the buildings and the property infrastructure that support the core business of the property user.  Facility services include building management, engineering services, space planning, janitorial services, records management, mail and messenger services, telecommunications, information systems, safety and security.

A facilities manager helps to organize the day-to-day operations of an organization and oversees the facility services.  The duties of a facilities manager range from managing vendors and contractors to arranging for maintenance and looking for opportunities to minimize costs, with the objective of increasing efficiency and adding value to an organization’s core business.

The roles of the facilities manager include:

• Representing the user/occupant of the facilities towards the property manager;
• Increasing the primary business effectiveness and productivity of the property user;
• Acting on the whole life cycle of the property;
• Managing the needs and demands of the property occupant; and
• Controlling the cost side of the property budget for the property occupant/client.
